My 3 year old is very into puzzles, so we got this for him for Christmas. He works it ALL the time, it's very durable (often we'll leave it on the floor for him to play with later and it holds up to him walking on it). Even after working it dozens of times, he still comes back to it, the image is stunning.
My son just turned 3 and is in love with puzzles. I'm concerned that after putting it together repeatedly that the design will start to peel off entirely. Second, it smells AWFUL. It's fun to put together but still a little challenging for a kiddo his size. I've left it out to air overnight and the pieces still have a very chemical odor to them. The colors are very vibrant, and there are so many species of fish in the puzzle that we can turn it into a learning and search and find game too once the puzzle is together. This one is currently his favorite. Nearly half the pieces have some sort of peeling going on.
That being said, I have two concerns. First, right out of the box some of the pieces were flaking at the edges. We love to get down on the floor and put it together, and there are some serious fumes coming off the pieces. I'm not sure if it's from the glue or the painting process or what, but I'm surprised at the odor.
My kids (3 & 2) had so much fun putting this together with me. The large pieces are great for younger kids and the puzzle is nice and sturdy.
They are also thick so they don't bend easily. It's 2 feet x 3 feet when completed and has extra large, colorful pieces. My two grandsons, ages 5 & 8, love this puzzle. The kids were so surprised by the size of the pieces when they first saw them and how big the finished puzzle was going to be that they couldn't wait to get started putting it together. Of course the size of each piece varies a little, but the approximate size of one piece 5 inches by 6 inches. The pieces lock together well and don't come apart when bumped. I would definitely recommend this item.
This puzzle is great for 3-6 year olds because of the size of the pieces and the durability of the cardboard-like material it is made from. It's hard to find transitional puzzles that aren't too baby-ish, with only a few large pieces, or too advanced, with tiny pieces that are easily lost or frustrate a young child. The bright colors and subject matter of the M&D puzzles are another plus. Love them.
